“Come, Lord Jesus” is from John’s 2009 CD Welcome Home for Christmas (wlp 008282). John has fashioned a tune that assemblies will love to sing and choirs will look forward to performing. The text is by Monsignor Frederick P. Annie of the Diocese of Wheeling, West Virginia. Written in 6/8, the rising diatonic motif in the refrain is effortless. The choir softly hums beneath the cantor’s verses. The bridge section employs syncopated piano writing beneath the familiar “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” (with descant). A return to the refrain a step higher concludes this attention-grabbing work. John’s parish, mission, and concert work throughout the country gives him the opportunity to write and perform many new works. This Advent song is one such tried-and-true piece.
