Vigil for the Deceased in the Absence of a Priest

Artist: Morency Gannon, Denise
Description: How do we minister to the bereaved of our parish communities?
Do our liturgies meet the needs of those experiencing death at close range?
How can we be of better service in the way that we meet with them? Worship with them? Minister to them in their immediate hours of need?
Beginning with guided imagery on the first night of prayer and ending with a mock Vigil for the Deceased before a funeral on the second day, two to three part in-service offers very practical ways to initiate
1)  a ministry of resurrection (bereavement team),
2)  a resurrection choir, with suggestions for songs and hymns that heal, console and remind us that we are a Paschal people.
3)  ways to initiate and execute the Vigil for the Deceased with particular attention to lay presiding in the absence of a priest. Viewed through the eyes of the conciliar documents with particular attention to the full, active participation of the assembly, the seminar includes ways to encourage sung prayer at the Vigil and at the funeral liturgy itself. Very practical for music directors, directors of parish liturgy, pastors, deacons and pastoral associates.
