Baroque composer G.B. Martini: "In Monte Oliveti" (On the Mount of Olives) and "Tristis Est Anima Mea(Sorrowful is My Soul)" for SAB chorus a cappella. These first-rate editions are ideal for all serious choirs or ensembles with limited forces. The vertical harmonic structure and underlay of melody and text are naturally accessible.
Topic:  Sorrow; Suffering; Passion; Crucifixion; Will of God
Liturgical Season:  Stations of the Cross; Tenebrae; Holy Thursday Night Watch
Sunday of the Year:  Holy Week; Palm Sunday; Holy Thursday; Good Friday
In Monte Oliveti (In the Mount of Olives) and Tristis Est Anima Mea (Sorrowful is My Soul) are two anthems best utilized for Holy Thursday Matins (Office of Readings). Both texts, sung in Latin, speak to the Agony in the Garden. However, it may also be possible to use them for other liturgies during Holy Week since, in a more general sense, the texts refer to or foreshadow the Passion. Although composed after 1700, these pieces maintain a Renaissance “feel.” The texture is mainly homophonic, and the harmonic progressions include secondary dominants and/or brief shifts in tonality, challenging the choristers’ ability to listen and tune with the ensemble. However, since they are arranged for SAB choir, and both pieces are quite brief, they would be more accessible to smaller ensembles, especially those with fewer men.
