A triumphant hymn, Cross of Hope is an excellent piece that could be used throughout the Lenten season. The nineteenth century text, written by Basil Anthony Moreau, highlights the saving power of the cross, the truth that suffering does not have the final word, and the belief that light always triumphs over darkness. It is, as the title suggests, a sign of hope. Warner skillfully weds the music and text, utilizing a full orchestration and composing a melody that is jubilant, in a good range, and easily sung by any assembly. Additionally, texts in three languages are offered for use: English, Spanish, and French. (One phrase of Latin exists in the refrain.) The two-part choral arrangement is very accessible for choirs, and the descant adds to the victorious nature of the piece.
