This charming SAB anthem by Ed Eicker allows us to hear familiar Lenten words with new ears. The tradition of fasting and prayer is proclaimed in stories of Jesus first, then our ancestors Moses and Elijah, Daniel, and John the Baptist. The soaring lyrical melody is offered first by unison women, then unison men, and two-part women. After a brief interlude, the full choir enters with the final verse, praying, “Then grant that we like them be true, Consumed in fast and prayer with you.” The piece concludes gently with a prayer for grace and joy. This one will stay with you and can bring depth to any Lenten gathering.
