This piece was written to prepare the worshiping community for the Advent season and conceived as a prelude to the liturgy, or as a communion song as the assembly comes forward to receive the sacrament.  There are verses for each cycle of readings, and the images contained therein. It should be done in a light, whispered fashion: the choral refrain should not overpower the piano! Sparing use of finger cymbals and hand drum work well. Also, because of the dance-like quality, the rhythm needs to remain steady, not too fast. A sense of detachment and hushed anticipation is important to this piece. These attributes - the quiet, the hush, the anticipation - help define the Advent season. From the recording Prophets of Joy by the University of Notre Dame Folk Choir.
