Performance Notes:  Measures 1 and 2 of the refrain provide an ostinato to be used with the verses.  The ostinato may be repeated softly as often as desired before bringing in each verse.  The refrain may speed up following each verse or may remain constant.  This can be decided by the director.  A four measure refrain may be desired.  If so, omit measures 3 and 4 or the refrain.  Depending upon the desired length, this piece may be performed as six separate verses with the refrain following each verse.  An alternative would be to couple verses 1 and 2, sung by male voices, followed by verses 3 and 4, sung by female voices, and closing with verses 5 and 6, sung by mixed voices.  The full refrain in addition to the ostinato, the assembly sings the full refrain throughout.  The verses should not ritard at the end.  A slight ritard is recommended just before beginning the ostinato at the end of the refrain.  The descant should be used only following verses 3-6, whether sung singly or coupled.  However, the descant should not be included as part of the ostinato.
