Alan Hommerding holds graduate degrees in theology, liturgy, and music from St. Mary's Seminary and University, Baltimore, and the University of Notre Dame, with additional studies in organ, accompanying and vocal/choral pedagogy at Princeton University, Westminster Choir College and the Peabody Conservatory.

Alan is the editor of AIM: Liturgy Resources magazine, a quarterly journal from World Library Publications, the music and liturgy division of the J.S. Paluch Company. He was project coordinator and WLP editor for the ChicAGO Centenary Anthology, a collection of historic and newly-commissioned organ works for the 2006 national convention of the American Guild of Organists, and the 100th anniversary of the Chicago chapter of AGO. His collection of hymn texts Song of the Spirit, and prayers for musicians Blessed Are the Music-Makers (both available from WLP) have received excellent reviews. As a hymnwriter, he appears in the most recent edition of Panorama of Christian Hymnody, and in the New Cambridge Dictionary of Hymnology.

In addition to his editorial work, Alan presents music clinics and reading sessions, hymn festivals and workshops on liturgy throughout the country, and maintains an active accompanying and performing schedule. Alan compiled A Sourcebook about Music and contributed to Traditions and Transitions, both from Liturgy Training Publications. He is a member of the music advisory staff for the archdiocese of Chicago's Office for Divine Worship, and has served as a faculty member, performing artist and accompanist for many archdiocesan programs and liturgical celebrations. He has written articles and reviews for Pastoral Music, Catechumenate, Modern Liturgy, The American Organist, Choral Journal, The Hymn, and Christianity and the Arts.
