Richard Proulx (1937-2010)

The world of liturgical music lost one of its leading lights and most exceptional composers with the passing of Richard Proulx. Congregations and choirs of many denominations—Roman Catholics in particular—were enriched by his musical creativity and craftsmanship. From chant-inspired melodies of a noble simplicity to grand musical textures for voices, organ, and instruments, the broad scope of Richard Proulx's gifts energized the music of the liturgical reform and renewal years of this past generation.

Richard's association with WLP goes back to the days of World Library of Sacred Music in Cincinnati when he published pieces in the Consoliere organ series. More recently, pieces for organ, choir, and psalm refrains for assembly were among his contributions to the WLP catalog and worship resources. His final works for WLP was revisions of the two "heritage" Masses by Jan Vermulst: the Mass for Christian Unity and the Peoples Mass, and a beautiful Gloria Simplex setting of the new English translation of the Gloria. We at WLP have lost not only a musical colleague, but a cherished artist and friend as well.

May choirs of angels welcome him to Paradise.

Papal Award given to Dr. William Tortolano

Dr. William Tortolano, Professor Emeritus of Fine Arts/Music at Saint Michael's College, received an award from the Pope, His Holiness, Benedict XVI, presented by The Most Rev. Salvatore Matano, Bishop of Burlington on December 8, 2009 at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral, Burlington, Vermont.

The honor, a papal award, called The Cross for the Church and Pontiff, Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice, recognized Dr. Tortolano for being a lifetime church musician who is "deeply devoted to the Church and the solemn and proper celebrations of the Church's liturgies," the Bishop said in his letter informing the professor of the award.
