Arise My Love: Song of Solomon

By : Steven C. Warner

Rev. Lucien Deiss, CSSp 1921-2007

On Tuesday, October 9, 2007, Reverend Lucien Deiss, CSSp, celebrated what he often referred to as "the most joyful day of my life" in returning home to be with his Lord.

Fr. Deiss, a native of France and resident of the Seminaire des Missiones in Larue, France, was during his lifetime a pastor, liturgist, author, international lecturer, renowned Scripture scholar, and an expert on liturgical music.

Best known to Roman Catholics in the U.S. through his scriptural songs such as "All the Earth," "Keep in Mind," and "Grant to Us, O Lord," Fr. Deiss was also widely known in Europe and the United States as a scholar in the fields of Sacred Scripture and Patristics. He was selected by Pope Paul VI to coordinate the Lectionary psalter following the Second Vatican Council. His Biblical Hymns and Psalms was the first significant way that millions of Catholics in the U.S. came to sing the Word of God and treasure it in their hearts. For this he was given an honorary Doctorate in Sacred Music from Duquesne University.

A tireless advocate of the reforms of Vatican II, Fr. Deiss continually encouraged those who worked in liturgical reform in this country to remain fervent in prayer to the Holy Spirit, and he dedicated much of his life to liturgical catechesis through workshops and the well-known "Deiss days" sponsored by WLP (then World Library of Sacred Music). He was, above all, a man of prayer, dedicated to the celebration of the Eucharist, and was always filled with a gentle and loving humor.

We at WLP mourn the passing of Fr. Deiss, and share in his joy as he lives and sings for all ages in the eternal light of his Risen Savior.

Keep in Mind
that Jesus Christ
has died for us
and is risen from the dead. He is our saving Lord.
He is joy for all ages!

Steven C. Warner

Steven Warner received his B.A. in Religious Studies from St. Michael's College in Winooski Park, Vermont, where he then served as a Director of Liturgy for two years. He moved to the University of Notre Dame, earning a Master's in Theology/Liturgy in 1980.

Mr. Warner joined the Campus Ministry staff at Notre Dame in 1979. Since that time he has continued to build up programs and enhance the integrity of sacred music and worship at the University. With his assistance the liturgical tradition on campus continues to grow, influenced by the presence of the Folk Choir and the liturgy preparation materials published through his office. A new hymnal supplement, residence hall music workshops, planning and celebration of campus-wide liturgical events, and coordination of musical resources for more than three dozen residence communities all take shape under his guidance. For the past decade, Mr. Warner has taught liturgical music to the graduate students involved in the Alliance for Catholic Education, a volunteer teaching corps headquartered at Notre Dame.
The Folk Choir was founded by Mr. Warner in 1980. Then a group of a dozen vocalists with no musical library, the group has now grown to more than fifty singers, instrumentalists, an assistant director, and several assistants pursuing their Master?s degrees in Sacred Music. The choir began a regular schedule of national and international tours in 1988, and recently completed its eighth trip to Ireland and Scotland in May of 2008. Their travels have taken them to New England, the Southeast, British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest, Arizona and California, as well as tours throughout the Midwest..

The repertoire of the choir is published exclusively through World Library Publications of Chicago, IL. "Songs of the Notre Dame Folk Choir" first appeared as an octavo series in 1995, and now comprises more than a hundred titles, including a collection of responsorial psalms for the church year. The choir?s most recent recording is ?Songs of Saints and Scholars,? a celebration of twenty years of touring the Emerald Isle, and a new live album "From Gethsemani to Galway" was recently recorded at the 2011 NPM convention in Louisville, KY, as part of the Folk Choir's 30th Anniversary celebration. Collaborators to the Notre Dame Folk Choir series have included the late Rev. Chrysogonus Waddell, ocso, former choirmaster of the Abbey of Gethsemani, and the assistant director of the Folk Choir, Ms. Karen Schneider-Kirner. Some of the compositions have become parochial standards in just a few years: "Set Your Heart on the Higher Gifts," "All Will Be Well," "Song of Judith," "The Lord's Prayer," and "Rosa Mystica" are several examples.

Warner composed two new Mass settings with WLP in 2011: ?Mass of Charity and Love?and a collaborative composition with Karen Schneider Kirner,?Mass for Our Lady.?
