Peter M. Kolar

Composer Peter Kolar is the former Editor of Hispanic Music and Publications for WLP. While part of the editorial staff from 1996 to 2019, he oversaw the development of resources for the Spanish-speaking and bilingual church, notably as founding editor of the nation?s first completely bilingual missal,Celebremos/Let Us Celebrate® and its companion hymnal/himnario. In addition to these contributions, Peter launched the bilingual psalm collection Aclama, Tierra Entera/Sing, All You Lands, the Spanish-language hymnalCantos del Pueblo de Dios, and spearheaded numerous projects with various WLP artists. His works and arrangements can be found in catholic hymnals across the United States.

In 2012, Peter released a solo piano CD, Variations, showcasing his talents as a performing artist. The album features his classically-inspired arrangements of sacred hymns and serious original works. As a liturgical pianist, Peter was the accompanist for numerous WLP showcases at NPM conventions over the years, and has played for such prominent liturgies as the Festival of Faith at Chicago?s Soldier Field (2000) and the Beatification Mass of Blessed Solanus Casey at Ford Field in Detroit (2017). In 2016, he led the musical performance for the ?Two Nations, One Faith? event at El Paso?s Sun Bowl stadium in conjunction with the papal visit to the U.S. border, and in 2018, he led a choir from the U.S. on tour in El Salvador for the canonization celebrations of Saint Oscar Romero.

In addition to his solo CD, several of Peter?s choral works are available through WLP. His acclaimed bilingual Mass setting Misa Luna, a staple at diocesan and conference liturgies nationwide, was sung at the papal liturgy with Pope Francis in Philadelphia and the Beatification Mass of Blessed Stanley Rother in Oklahoma City. Other notable compositions include the bilingual intercessions Oración de los Fieles, the solemn hymn O Christ the Healer, a contemporary setting of the Litany of the Saints, Enter Into the House of the Lord, the majestic reverie How Wonderful Your Name, and El Señor Es Compasivo, WLP?s best-selling bilingual setting of Psalm 103. Peter?s much-anticipated second bilingual Mass setting, ?Mass of the Sun of Justice/Misa Sol de Justicia,? will be available in late 2019.

In 2004, Peter was commissioned to write the theme song for the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress, the result being the energetic pop anthem Healing Balm with featured vocalist Danielle Rose on the CD God Is My Rock. Peter also served for several years as the director of the Chicago-based Holy Cross Marimba Ensemble, with whom he recorded the CD Marimbas Fantásticas.

Peter currently resides in El Paso, Texas, where he is the director of the El Paso Diocesan Choir and a member of the board of directors for the Southwest Liturgical Conference. Most recently, he served as a consultant to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in creating the Spanish-language chant settings for the Misal Romano, Tercera Edición. He remains a sought-after bilingual clinician in the areas of liturgy, music, and ministry.

Lord Let Us See Your Kindness - Thompson

Aaron Thompson's newest composition, a setting of Psalm 85, features a rhythmic and ear-catching refrain set for three voices. In this adaptation, Thompson uses exact Lectionary text to create this noteworthy and memorable contemporary work. The final verse changes key and sets up the return to the final refrain, in which the vocal parts enter separately and crescendo to a stirring conclusion. Thanks to Thomas W. Jefferson for his arranging contributions.
