Richard J. Clark

Richard J. Clark, has served since 1989 as Music Director and Organist at Saint Cecilia Church in Boston, Massachusetts. Since 2004, he has been the Chapel Organist and Cantor at Saint Mary's Chapel, Boston College. He has also served in various capacities for the Archdiocese of Boston including directing the Office of Divine Worship Saint Cecilia Schola in recordings of the ICEL Chants from the Roman Missal, Third Edition.

Ministry & Liturgy Magazine has called his music "transformative" as well as "expertly arranged and prayerfully sung."

An eclectic musician, his appearances range from the Celebrity Series of Boston and the Boston Philharmonic to Jive Records (Sony BMG) and the New York Songwriter Circle at the historic ?Bitter End,? Greenwich Village, NYC. His compositions have been performed on four continents. Notable are performances in Russia of his organ work Ascent to Freedom by American virtuoso Mark Husey and performances by the American Boychoir under the direction of Fernando Malvar-Ruiz. His collaboration with Malvar-Ruiz has continued with a commission for the American Choral Directors Association. Richard has also been a guest artist and lecturer for the Berklee College of Music Composition Department. His work has also been used in Kódaly workshops in the United States and Australia.

As organist, conductor or composer, Richard has appeared on numerous radio programs including XM Radio?s Sounds from the Spires with Dr. Jennifer Pascual. These programs have featured the St. Cecilia Choir, his CD Requiem pour une américaine à Paris with trumpet player Richard Kelley, as well as his Mass in Honor of Pope Saint John Paul II and Mass of the Angels (CanticaNOVA Publications). He also appears with his wife, clarinetist Kara Gretschel Clark, on the Cathedral Encores CD featuring the 1875 E. & G.G. Hook, opus 801, at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross (Boston). His liturgical, choral, and organ works can also be found with Corpus Christi Watershed and RJC Cecilia Music.

Born in Greenwich Village, New York City, he is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music and the Boston Conservatory, where he earned a Masters Degree in Organ Performance with James David Christie, organist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He is also a member of the music honor society, Pi Kappa Lambda.

He lives just outside of Boston with his wife and four children.
